Fabrizio Romano shares Richard Hughes’ stance on quitting Liverpool for Saudi
Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is attracting serious interest from Saudi Arabia and from Al-Hilal in particular, as Fabrizio Romano now confirms.
When Hughes arrived at Liverpool in 2024, the club was at a crossroads.
Jürgen Klopp had said his goodbyes, Arne Slot was the new man in the dugout, and there were serious questions about whether FSG could attract the level of recruitment talent needed to rebuild around a new era.
Hughes answered those questions emphatically.
In his second summer transfer window, the former Bournemouth director oversaw a series of statement signings that sent a message to the rest of the Premier League.
Alexander Isak arrived from Newcastle. Florian Wirtz — one of the most coveted midfielders in European football — was secured from Bayer Leverkusen. Hugo Ekitiké added further firepower. The ambition was unmistakable, and the investment was enormous.

The Reds are in pole position.
It has not been a seamless journey. Questions have been raised about the impact of some of those marquee arrivals, with the squad’s form failing at times to match the outlay.
There was also a suggestion that Hughes reportedly overruled Slot on the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich — a decision that raised eyebrows about the dynamics at Anfield.
But in terms of the club’s trajectory, the direction of travel has been clear: Liverpool are spending big, thinking big, and competing at the very top of European football’s transfer market. Hughes has been central to all of it.
Which is exactly why what Romano revealed this week will have raised eyebrows through the red half of Merseyside.
Fabrizio Romano reveals Richard Hughes stance on Liverpool exit
According to Romano, speaking on his YouTube channelSaudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal have identified Hughes as their primary target for the director of football role — and the interest is serious.
Romano was unambiguous about confirming the story.
“According to reports in Saudi Arabia, and I can confirm that it’s true, that Richard Hughes, Liverpool director, is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, especially from Al-Hilal.
“So, Richard Hughes is now the clear favourite to become the future director at Al-Hilal.”
It is at this point, however, that the situation becomes considerably more nuanced — because Hughes himself is not pushing for the exit door.
“Richard Hughes remains absolutely and totally committed to the Liverpool project and he’s very happy at the club,” Romano continued.
“So he remains completely focused on the Liverpool project, but the interest from Saudi is true. They are trying from Saudi to find a solution for Richard Hughes, for now, for the future. Let’s see if they are going to be able to find a way to appoint Richard Hughes, but I can confirm the admiration, I can confirm the interest. Let’s see what Richard Hughes decides to do.”
That final line is the one that matters. Hughes is happy. He is committed.
Liverpool will be watching this one very closely.
Losing Hughes now, with a summer rebuild potentially on the horizon and the manager situation unresolved, would be a significant blow at the worst possible time.
However, it appears he isn’t exactly clamoring for the exit door.
