£4.5m Rangers dud has become a bigger flop than Danilo

Glasgow Rangers did a lot of brilliant work in the January transfer window by bringing in Tochi Chukwuani, Tuur Rommens and Ryan Naderi to bolster their squad.

Andreas Skov Olsen, signed on loan from Wolfsburg, has not quite been as successful as the permanent additions, but he still has time to make a name for himself at Ibrox.

Whilst the incoming signings deserve to be praised, the best work that the Light Blues did was in moving on several players who were surplus to requirements under Danny Rohl, such as Danilo.

After scoring three goals in 14 appearances in the Scottish Premiership during the first half of the campaign, the Brazilian centre-forward was loaned out to NEC Nijmegen in the winter window.

The Dutch side have an option to make the deal permanent this summer, but he has only scored one goal in seven games in the Eredivisie for his current club.

Rangers forward wants permanent exit from Ibrox

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not Danilo will complete a permanent move to Nijmegen at the end of the season, there was another forward who could be on his way out.

The Brazilian marksman was not the only Light Blues attacker who was moved on by the Scottish giants during the January transfer window.

Colombian winger Oscar Cortes joined Huracan on loan for the 2026 campaign and they have an option to sign him permanently for a fee of up to £1.65m.

Now, according to Football InsiderCortes wants to seal a permanent move away from Ibrox at the end of his loan spell, which will be at the end of December.

The report claims that the former RC Lens winger does not have any future in Glasgow because he will not be a part of Rohl’s plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

It adds that, despite still wanting to play in Europe, Cortes would be interested in sealing a permanent move to Huracan in the January transfer window in 2027, at the end of his loan stint.

How Oscar Cortes has been a bigger Rangers flop than Danilo

Now, Danilo could be considered to be a big flop for the Light Blues because he may leave permanently this summer after joining from Feyenoord for £6m in 2023.

The Brazilian striker missed a whopping 63 games through injury in less than three full seasons with the Gers and never scored more than six goals in all competitions in a single campaign.

Given the money that was spent on his services under Michael Beale, it is fair to say that Danilo did not live up to expectations at Ibrox, despite some moments of quality in front of goal.

Cortes, though, has been an even bigger flop than Danilo because of how little he contributed on the pitch in Glasgow before joining Huracan on loan.

The Colombian forward was signed from Lens for £4.5m in the summer of 2025, as part of a pre-agreed transfer, after spending 18 months on loan and only producing one goal and one assist in 16 Premiership appearances.

It was telling that the winger was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon just one competitive appearance after being signed permanently for £4.5m, as Russell Martin did not deem him good enough to be a part of the squad.

Should Cortes seal a permanent move to Huracan at the end of his loan spell, the 22-year-old attacker will leave Rangers with one goal and two assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.

Danilo, at least, scored 16 goals and provided 11 assists in 76 games for the club before his January move, which showed that he offered significantly more to the team than Cortes ever did.

The Gers are also set to make a significant loss on him if Huracan pay £1.65m to sign the attacker permanently, as they paid £4.5m to sign him from Lens just last summer.

It simply never worked out for Cortes at Ibrox and it seems to be the best for all parties involved for him to seal a permanent exit, because he was an even bigger flop than Danilo and does not appear to have a future under Rohl.
