Chelsea set to approach Arsenal legend after sacking Liam Rosenior

Chelsea could be set to approach an Arsenal legend with Liam Rosenior now officially sacked.

Rosenior officially sacked by Chelsea after worst run in 114 years

Rosenior’s position as Chelsea head coach came to an end this afternoon after the club’s form collapsed to a historic low, with Calum McFarlane named as interim head coach.

Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton was Chelsea’s fifth consecutive Premier League loss without scoring a single goal — the first time the club has endured such a run since November 1912.

The Blues last found the net in the league in a win at Aston Villa at the start of March, and have since been beaten by Newcastle, Everton, Manchester City, Manchester United and Brighton.

Chelsea now sit seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool with five games remaining.

Champions League qualification, which looked achievable just a few weeks ago, is now in serious doubt.

The Blues have lost their last five Premier League games on the spin.

The situation inside the club deteriorated sharply prior to Rosenior’s sacking, according to various reports, and his departure was pretty inevitable in the build up to Chelsea’s statement.

During the loss at the Amex Stadium, Chelsea failed to register a single attempt on target, and Rosenior was the subject of chants from travelling supporters in the second half.

He admitted afterwards the performance was “indefensible in every aspect.”

Some believe that Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann is a dream target for Chelsea to succeed Rosenior, but he isn’t the only big name on their radar.

Chelsea to approach Cesc Fabregas with Liam Rosenior now sacked

According to insider Simon Phillips, things were toxic after the final whistle against Brighton.

Sources told Phillips, via his Substack, that Rosenior did not conduct a post-match team talk, effectively saying farewell to his staff and players before leaving the ground.

Phillips also reported that some players were ‘laughing and joking’ about the manager within their circles, with trust and respect in the dressing room described as having been lost.

The 41-year-old only took charge in January following Enzo Maresca’s departure and had initially been backed to see through at least the start of next season.

However, the line has now been drawn.

Phillips reports that Como manager Cesc Fàbregas has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Rosenior, and the west Londoners look set to approach him having now made the decision to get rid.

Cesc-Fabregas-Como

Phillips stated earlier today that Chelsea will contact Fabregas over taking charge in the summer after McFarlane sees them through the rest of 25/26 – it is unlikely he’d come immediately.

“Based off what I’ve heard though, I’d be VERY surprised if we don’t get that official statement from Chelsea today saying they have let him go and McFarlane takes the team for now – likely until the summer when they go for a new permanent manager,” Phillips said.

“I know they will approach Cesc Fabregas if this does happen, but I’m not sure he will come right now.”

The Arsenal legend, who also played 198 games for Chelsea between 2014 and 2019, and has since earned considerable praise for his work in Italy, guiding Como through an excellent spell in Serie A.

Como’s own president has publicly acknowledged that Fabregas could one day leave for a bigger club, naming Chelsea among those he could see the Spaniard joining.
