Spurs readying offer to sign their best winger since Son for £26m
Tottenham Hotspur’s decline has not come due to a lack of money. The Londoners have spent on a range of players in recent years, but it hasn’t stopped them sinking to their nadir in the Premier League.
Decidedly lacking down Hotspur Way is a clear and united focus, and that needs to change. Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange have let this great club sink into an “embarrassing” relegation battle, one they survived, but barely, on the last game of the season.
A shocking number of injuries have hardly helped, but while Spurs have been dealt a tough hand, they have made a mess of the cards in front of them, and it could have been disastrous.

It’s clear that the club need a lot more in attacking areas, having keenly felt the absence of Heung-min Son over the past year.
Spurs set to make offer for their new Son
Son, like Harry Kane before him, was an irreplaceable part of Tottenham’s attack. But Tottenham didn’t make good use of their cards, with Mohammed Kudus failing to bring the direct goal threat before succumbing to a season-ending injury in January.
That’s not all. Randal Kolo Muani’s loan spell was a disaster, and Wilson Odobert is out for the long run with an ACL injury. Brennan Johnson was sold to Crystal Palace in January.
These are the many variables that have conspired against the Lilywhites this season, and ENIC Group can ill-afford to get it wrong once again this summer.
According to Voetbal InternationalTottenham are showing concrete interest in relegated West Ham United star Crysencio Summerville, who are ready to make another offer after failing last year.
AS Roma are also firmly in contention, having qualified for the Champions League after an excellent season in Serie A. Given that the Netherlands star is potentially available for only £26m, Spurs need to do everything they can to add a significant dimension to their frontline.
West Ham may be reluctant to do business with their rivals, but they need money after falling into the Championship, and Summerville has proved over the past year that he has the potential to excel after a cross-London switch.
Why Summerville can be Spurs’ new Son
Summerville is one of the most talented wingers in the Premier League, but it’s fair to say that he hasn’t always maintained his highest level for the club.
He proved several years ago when at Leeds United in the Championship that he has top-class potential, and now, Tottenham can help him realise that, belatedly replacing Son with a winger who has been described as “unpredictable” in the danger area by pundit Gianfranco Zola.
He might not be Son, but Summerville’s pace and athleticism – and while he only scored five Premier League goals this year, he also missed only seven big chances, emphasising a clinical edge that could be developed under De Zerbi’s wing.
Moreover, the Dutchman emerged as West Ham’s most impressive attacking outlet across the final weeks of the campaign, finally hitting his stride. If he maintains that level at Tottenham, supporters could be in for a treat.
Summerville was unable to save West Ham from relegation, but there’s no question that his quality and flair made a difference. Without him, the Hammers would not have put up so much of a fight.
Spurs need such a player on the left wing, someone who, still young, could stand out as the outfit’s main man in attack. Summerville knows adversity, and he might just have the hunger to start hitting higher beats, leading a Spurs side toward revival through pace and potency down the left – capable of shifting to the centre when needed too.
Summerville is bound to leave the London Stadium this summer, one of the more profitable members of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Whether he chooses to follow in Kudus’ footsteps remains to be seen, but there’s no question that he has the potential to emerge as Tottenham’s finest winger since Son.
