Lucas Chevalier could ignore high salary offers to join Tottenham this summer
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero will not join Manchester United this summer as the Lilywhites seek to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s squad rather than weaken it.
Tottenham transfer updates: Romero, Davies, new goalkeeper
Speculation on Romero’s future increased this week amid claims in the Argentina defender’s homeland that the Old Trafford club were ready to bid for the 28-year-old.
However, sources understand those reports are wide of the mark and Romero is not on the list of targets for United and head coach Michael Carrick.
Tottenham could still listen to offers for the centre-back after a poor 2025-26 campaign in which Romero received two reds cards and a separate suspension before missing the final six matches with a knee injury.
Romero also made headlines ahead of the last game of the season after returning to Argentina to complete his rehabilitation despite Spurs’ Premier League status being on the line at home to Everton on May 24.
The World Cup winner subsequently returned to England to be present for the final-day relegation decider, but the north London club will sell the defender for the right price and Atletico Madrid have held long-standing interest in the player.

Spurs remain keen on strengthening their defence.
One man who will certainly not be leaving however is fellow defender Ben Davies.
Davies has signed a new 12-month deal at Tottenham to extend his stay at the club into a 13th season and the Wales captain could also be joined by a new goalkeeper in the coming weeks.
Tottenham make approach for PSG star
Indeed, reports in France claim Spurs are one of several sides to make an approach for out of favour PSG shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier.
According to The Teamboth Tottenham and Besiktas have made contact to sign the 24 year-old France international, who joined the Champions League winners last summer with high expectations, but lost his place to Matvéi Safónov.
And perhaps due to that experience, Chevalier is said to be ready to reject ‘high salaries’ being offered in Turkey in favour of a move to an attractive project.
Spurs themselves could of course be waving goodbye to a goalkeeper this summer in the shape of Guglielmo Vicario, who has been strongly linked with a return to Italy, which would open the door for Chevalier to claim a starting spot in North London.
Tottenham are also lining up a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, but they will face competition for his signature from Aston Villa.
