Why Man Utd want to sign £39m Rashford replacement

Manchester United haven’t done enough in the transfer market this summer, but there is plenty of time for Michael Carrick and his men to make the requisite changes.

Carrick does have a new recruit joining him at Old Trafford next season, though, and his name is Marcus Rashford. Fresh from his title-winning loan spell with Barcelona, the 28-year-old winger will link up with his long-time club for pre-season.

Last time Rashford was involved with United in a competitive capacity, he fell by the wayside, cut adrift by Ruben Amorim. Many expected Rashford to stay in Catalonia on a permanent basis, having scored 14 goals and supplied 14 assists in all competitions. The £25m buy option was a meagre one, but La Blaugrana chose Anthony Gordon instead, signing Rashford’s Three Lions teammate for £69m.

Rashford, by all accounts, is currently slated to stay – and yet, INEOS continue to search for wingers.

Why Man Utd are still searching for wingers

In some ways, parting with Rashford seems foolish. He is an accomplished winger with a wealth of experience at the Theatre of Dreams. He is a boyhood Manchester United supporter, and once scored 30 goals in a single campaign (2022/23) for the club.

There is a quiet sense that Rashford’s return to Carrick’s squad is little more than a gambit devised to drum up interest in his signature. Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs to have expressed interest in signing him this summer.

Rashford knows the Premier League well, has scored 89 goals in the competition. However, INEOS are trying to wipe the slate clean, freshening the ranks up and whittling the wage bill down – Rashford earns £325k per week, making him one of the highest earners in England.

There’s a sense that United are tacitly prepared to offload Rashford still, even though his release clause has now expired, meaning negotiations could prove more tricky.

Reports that United are interested in superstars such as Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior may well be wide of the park, but there are players on Jason Wilcox and co’s radar, and if movement regarding Rashford firms up in the coming weeks, there’s one man who could make a world of difference for Carrick next year.

Man Utd ready to replace Rashford

Man United have an assortment of wide profiles. However, Amad Diallo has also been linked with a move away this summer, and while the tricksy Ivorian attacker typically plays off the right, United need to aim for an even bigger talent if they are to progress under Carrick’s wing.

Well, according to Fabrizio RomanoMan United are actually ready to replace Rashford with an even bigger talent than Amad: West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville, who has recently been the subject of a £39m bid from Roma.

With Rashford currently preparing for reintegration at Old Trafford, INEOS’s interest in Summerville has cooled. Still, United have shown plenty of interest in West Ham’s Dutch winger over the past few months, and his performances for club and country make the suggestion that he is ready for the highest level.

Kevin Nolan remarked that he was “incredible” during West Ham’s ultimately unsuccessful fightback against relegation, a focal point who was targeted by teammates searching for salvation. He might have failed in keeping them up, but his powerful running and elegance on the ball are attributes that United need to strengthen their project.

The Netherlands international is still only 24, and though he is not quite riding the crest of a wave, he has emerged from troubled waters at the London Stadium with a long and elite line of suitors ready to throw him a life-line.

If he wants to stay in the Premier League, Man United could be the perfect destination, allowing him to continue to make headway and play the high-intensity role on the left that the system needs.

While Rashford is probably more potent in front of goal, Summerville showed that he has that in his locker, notching two goals and two assists apiece for Oranje this summer, also winning 5.5 duels and completing 1.6 dribbles each game on average in the league last year.

Looking at Diallo for a second, a player who made progress and deepened with connection with the United fanbase last season, we perhaps see that Summerville has even more potential than him. The 24-year-old only scored twice in the Premier League last year, missing six big chances. He won four duels per game on average, but Summerville edges him there too.

They are two wingers with a likeness, but Summerville would establish himself as the star man, and while uncertainty over Rashford remains, United cannot afford to let this one slip.

This is a winger who would lift Manchester United. He is much younger than Rashford and possibly has the more robust approach than Diallo.

Mateus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are not out-and-out wingers, and in that Summerville could be the cream of the crop for United next year, packing more of a punch than Amad while shaving a big financial burden off the wage bill, replacing Rashford.
