Denzel Dumfries’ bargain price tag as Aston Villa, Liverpool and Man United circle
Aston Villa, Liverpool and Man United have set their sights on a highly-rated Inter Milan player after news they could snap him up for just £22m.
Villa’s rumoured transfer plans ahead of the summer windowAston Villa’s summer is already taking shape, even if the window is months away.
Unai Emery, according to some reports, is understood to be pursuing a permanent deal for Man United loanee Jadon Sancho as one of his primary attacking targets, with representative discussions already held over signing the Englishman on a free transfer.
A move for Lazio centre-back Mario Gila is also reportedly being explored, while Lucas Bergvall at Tottenham and Jean-Philippe Mateta at Crystal Palace have been linked in various capacities too.
The ambition is clear — Vila are not a club content to stand still, and with Champions League revenue essential to the financial model, Emery will be backed to maintain the upward trajectory that has made Villa one of English football’s most compelling projects.
Aston Villa launch move to ruin De Zerbi’s plans by signing Leeds star instead of Tottenham
The Villans have joined the race for an in-demand Leeds United player.
Now another prominent name from Serie A has joined the conversation, and this one comes with a rare and tantalising clause attached.
Aston Villa eye golden chance to sign Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries
L’Interista reports that Denzel Dumfries is attracting interest from across the Premier League ahead of what could be a pivotal summer at the San Siro, with Aston Villa among the English clubs monitoring developments alongside Liverpool, Man United and Man City.
The Dutch wing-back’s future at Inter is genuinely uncertain — and the mechanism that could make a move happen sits inside his current contract.
When Dumfries signed his deal in 2024, extending his stay in Milan until 2028, his camp negotiated a £22m release clause for foreign clubs, active from July.
For a player of his profile and pedigree, that figure is remarkable.
Inter are now in the uncomfortable position of trying to offer him an extension — reportedly worth around £4m per year to 2029 — on the condition that the clause is removed entirely.
Whether Dumfries accepts those terms or exercises his escape route remains the central question.
The 29-year-old was pivotal in Inter’s run to the Champions League final last term, but has seen his minutes considerably dropped this season due to an ankle injury which required surgery.
He has never hidden his desire to play in the Premier League either, and with the financial power of English football, allied to the lure of a fresh challenge at a pivotal point in his career, makes a move feel increasingly plausible.
The Interist claim that Villa are eyeing the opportunity to sign Dumfries for what would be a bargain fee alongside their Premier League rivals, and it is a chance which should be seriously considered.
Those who watched him at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will need no reminding of what he is capable of.
Rio Ferdinandnever a man given to understated praise, was fulsome in his assessment.
“He’s integral, just like Daley Blind, to the way that Louis van Gaal works,” said the former England captain.
“They’re the outlet that get beyond, and he’s a player you look at and think that he’s athletic, can beat people one-on-one. It’s not just about being there, it’s the quality.
“He’s not putting balls in willy-nilly, he’s picking people out, those cutbacks have been ever so dangerous. He doesn’t mind working at the other end of the pitch, as well.
“He’s been a breath of fresh air for them and a very important player.”
Inter are not willing sellers, but if Dumfries chooses not to accept a new deal without his clause, the summer could move very quickly.
