APAC builds smarter grids and more resilient energy networks

A provider of power meter and IIoT infrastructure is expanding its output in the APAC region. The company, Trilliant, has supplied smart meters to over 13 million homes in the region, and plans to add millions more to its AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) in the coming months.

To that end, it’s entered into partnerships with local companies in Japan, India, Thailand, Philippines, and Malaysia.

Trilliant’s AMI platform currently lets utility companies monitor energy use in real time. Providers can interact with their customers on the back of collected data, meaning they can inform them about their energy use, and offer smarter services via the AMI platform.

Eugene Loke, Managing Director for APAC at Trilliant, said, “APAC utility leaders need to look beyond just billing for their use cases in AMI. They must use the full potential of a robust AMI network to support a broader range of operational and customer-centric functions.”

“For example, Southeast Asia is seeing growing consumer engagement with smart meters, including improved energy monitoring, budget setting, and real-time use tracking.”

Utilities can design networks that support Distribution Automation (DA)offering real-time grid support, remote disconnect features, and backup power lasting up to eight hours in the case of outages. Customers can also prepay for electricity using Trilliant AMI.

Customers can access differential pricing by prioritising when they use power to get the best kWh rate. Trilliant terms these Demand Response (DR) solutions, which alter customer charges based on the season or time of day. Load Control Programs allow real-time control of high-powered equipment, and Conservation Voltage Reduction lowers voltage without affecting power quality.

On the supplier’s side, the Trilliant infrastructure can help utilities manage demand more efficiently, preventing costly ad hoc power purchases during peak times.

Trilliant’s AMI platform also scales for use up to and including entire cities, controlling and monitoring streetlights and saving energy. Trilliant SecureReach connectivity and IIoT can be installed in the form of data hubs on lampposts, which some early adopters have begun to use as the source for on-street advertising sites.

Further use cases with the AMI platform include remote re-energise/de-energise, which allows utilities to connect or disconnect their service without having to send out field crews, while Outage Management provides detection of and response to outages through the use of the real-time data provided by smart meters.

Trilliant’s expansion in the APAC region shows there’s an increasing demand for digital energy infrastructure, as countries aim to meet sustainability and energy transition goals.
