Brazilian journalist shares Emerson Royal to Aston Villa update after key twist
Aston Villa have learned a key update on their pursuit of former Tottenham defender Emerson Royal, with news emerging from Brazilian media sources.
Villa have been linked with Emerson for much of the past week after reports in both England and Brazil suggested discussions had opened over a possible transfer.
The Premier League side are understood to be exploring a deal for the versatile defender as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his options at right-back ahead of another campaign featuring European football.
Several reports claimed Villa had made an approach following initial contact with Flamengo, where Emerson has rebuilt his career after returning to Brazilian football, and some even suggested that Emerson was on the verge of a move to the Midlands.

The 27-year-old has attracted interest thanks to his experience in both the Premier League and La Liga, having previously represented Tottenham, Real Betis and Barcelona.
His ability to operate as a traditional right-back or further forward as a wing-back have made him an appealing option for Villa’s recruitment team, as they look to provide backup to Matty Cash.
However, the latest update suggests a move may not be straightforward.
Aston Villa learn Emerson Royal twist as Flamengo make stance crystal clear
According to Brazilian journalist Vene Casagrande, Flamengo have decided, as things stand, not to sell Emerson to Villa after all.
Casagrande reports that the Brazilian club’s current position is to retain the defender despite ongoing discussions between the two clubs over the last few days.
That stance could yet change later in the transfer window, but for now Flamengo are not prepared to sanction his departure.

Credibility |
Vene Casagrande is regarded by some as one of Brazil’s most reliable football journalists, particularly when reporting on Flamengo. He has built strong contacts within the club and is regularly first with team news, transfer developments and contract updates. His reports are frequently cited by Brazilian and international media outlets. |

Finances |
Financially, a deal looks realistic, with Villa reportedly offering around £8 million and Flamengo valuing Emerson Royal closer to £9 million. A transfer at that level would comfortably fit within Villa’s current SCR framework after their recent careful spending, but Flamengo’s reluctance to sell currently represents the biggest obstacle rather than the finances. |
|
Insight |
Emerson began his career at Ponte Preta before moving to Atlético Mineiro and then Barcelona. He enjoyed a strong spell at Real Betis before joining Spurs in 2021, where his form was pretty mixed despite making over 100 appearances. He later moved to AC Milan very briefly before sealing a switch to Flamengo, and has earned 10 caps for Brazil. |

Impact |
Emerson would have strengthened Aston Villa’s squad depth rather than displaced Matty Cash as first-choice right-back. His experience across the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A would have given Emery a dependable rotation option. |
Villa are expected to continue assessing the market as they look to add further depth to Emery’s squad before the new season begins.
Strengthening at right-back has remained one of several priorities this summer as Villa prepare for another demanding schedule.
Aston Villa have alternative closer to home after Emerson Royal roadblock
While Emerson’s experience would undoubtedly have strengthened the squad, missing out on the Brazilian may not significantly alter Villa’s transfer plans.
One alternative who could still appeal is Kyle Walker-Peters, whose versatility allows him to play on either side of the defence and who has extensive Premier League experience.
His technical ability, comfort in possession and speed would suit Emery’s style of football, while his potential availability on the cheap after West Ham’s relegation could represent a strong market opportunity.
The only issue there is whether Walker-Peters is willing to play second fiddle to Cash, but given he arrived at West Ham on a free transfer last summer, the fee they’d get for him would go down as pure profit.
That potentially means the Hammers could at least be open to talks as they look to keep balancing the books.
