Equinix opens first Chennai data centre for AI growth in India

  • Equinix has opened CN1, its first Chennai data centre for AI.
  • Linked to Mumbai, the site supports high-density computing and renewable power.

India’s demand for digital infrastructure and AI-ready facilities has taken another step forward with the launch of Equinix’s first International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Chennai, known as CN1. Built on nearly six acres in Siruseri, the site connects directly with the company’s three data centres in Mumbai, creating stronger links for businesses in the country.

The CN1 facility starts with 800 cabinets of capacity, supported by an initial investment of $69 million, and will eventually scale up to 4,250 cabinets. It has been designed for 99.999% uptime and comes with a full range of interconnection services, including Equinix Fabric, which allows companies to connect to multiple cloud providers and partners.

Another important aspect of CN1 is its readiness for liquid cooling, a feature needed to support the power demands of AI systems and other high-density workloads. This puts the centre in a strong position to handle the kinds of computing tasks that are now central to India’s technology goals.

Chennai is also becoming a key player in this area. Tamil Nadu has been working to build its reputation as a hub for research, investment, and advanced computing. The addition of CN1 supports that push and strengthens the city’s role in helping India compete in global digital and AI markets.

Meeting India’s digital ambitions

India has set its sights on becoming a leader in emerging technologies, including AI, quantum computing, blockchain, and edge computing. The fields require large amounts of computing power and advanced data processing, making data centres an essential part of the nation’s strategy. The launch of CN1 adds to the country’s growing digital backbone and provides a base to support future developments in these areas.

Equinix currently serves more than 300 companies in India, ranging from network providers to internet exchanges. Its Mumbai campus connects businesses to cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. With the opening of CN1, customers in Chennai now have low-latency access to the wider ecosystem.

Extending reach and connectivity

Manoj Paul, Managing Director for Equinix India, said the launch of CN1 marked an important step in the company’s expansion in the country. “Our success in building the most interconnected ecosystem for cloud, carrier, content and enterprises in Mumbai will now be extended to customers in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, global enterprises planning to come closer to their customers in southern India now can use Equinix’s IBX facility in Chennai.”

He said the project reflects both national and regional goals. “The milestone highlights our commitment to empowering India’s position as a global technology hub while ensuring sustainability and innovation remain at the core of our operations.”

A focus on sustainability

The facility uses a fault-tolerant system that the company claims can deliver 99.999% uptime, maintaining reliable connectivity through diverse fibre paths. Equinix is backed by investments in renewable energy, including solar and wind.

A global network

Equinix runs more than 270 data centres in 77 markets in 36 countries, supporting over 10,000 businesses worldwide. In Asia-Pacific the company operates more than 60 data centres in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
