Latest Newcastle United injury news, return dates and suspensions
Newcastle United have been hampered by inconsistency and a number of injuries over the past months, with a top-four spot now firmly out of reach.
A win over Fulham last time out got the Magpies back to winning ways, but they face an even more difficult test tomorrow, as they’ll welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St James’ Park.
As we get closer towards the business end of the season, Eddie Howe will be eager to avoid any further blows to his squad, so with that in mind, Football FanCast is here to keep you updated with the latest injury and suspension news coming out of St James’ Park.
Latest Newcastle United injury news
Newcastle United’s injury situation has worsened since the clash.
Nick Pope is looking like he will return in late April.
Joelinton looks like he’s set to be out until next term, which is as a huge blow for Eddie Howe.
Sadly, the Magpies’ striker issues still remain as Callum Wilson is still out.
And, the likes of Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Tino Livramento won’t be back until the end of the month at the very least.
Also, sadly for Howe, the likes of Lewis Miley, Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are set for an extended period out on the sidelines.
It remains to be seen as to when Matt Targett will return, but what we do know is that he’s been joined by Joe Willock and Lewis Hall, who are the latest casualties.
Eddie Howe provided a little update ahead of tomorrow’s clash, with pretty much every player above set to miss out:
“The closest player to coming back would be Tino Livramento, he has not trained with the team but has been out on the grass. Lewis Hall has not trained at all this week, so he is a slight concern from last week. Other players are doing well in the background so I am hoping in the not-too-distant future we can get three or four back.”

Lewis Hall – quad
Lewis Hall was substituted against Fulham due to fatigue. However, it looks as if he must still be struggling as Eddie Howe provided a slightly worrying update:
“Lewis Hall has not trained at all this week so he has been a slight concern from the previous game. Tightness in quad, it’s not a muscle pull directly, but enough to see him miss training this week and he’s a doubt for the game.”
Joe Willock – achilles
Joe Willock is another who’s been added to the injury list at Newcastle after lasting only 40 minutes last time out against Fulham.
He’s set to see another specialist as he’s still having issues with the achilles that kept him out for so long. Here’s what Howe had to say:
“Joe has been to see another specialist to check on the progress on his achilles which has been problematic for him and a difficult injury because it has not been as straightforward. There have been a few complications through the process. Him returning back to full fitness, the feedback is positive generally in that the achilles is healing and doing well, but it will fluctuate from time to time and have moments where it is not feeling too good. For Tottenham, I’m not sure I probably think he won’t be available for us, there’s a chance he will be available throughout the rest of the season but that is slightly unclear. We need to be sure that the long-term prognosis for him is positive, that might mean a short period of rest.”
Jamaal Lascelles – ACL
Eddie Howe received even more terrible news last week as Jamaal Lascelles picked up an ACL injury.
This is set to see him miss around 6-9 months of action.
Tino Livramento – ankle
Tino Livramento is another injury worry for Howe.
He picked up an injury while playing against Everton, but Howe has provided a more positive update on him:
“The closest player to coming back would be Tino Livramento, he has not trained with the team but has been out on the grass.”
Miguel Almiron – knee
Almiron is another name on Newcastle’s growing list of injuries after tweaking his knee.
He didn’t specify an exact date of return but said it will be at least a few weeks in his press conference:
“Miggy, just crossing the ball, he got his studs caught in the turf and tweaked his knee, not serious but a few weeks.”
Matt Targett – achilles
Eddie Howe also revealed recently that Matt Targett is sidelined with an achilles injury.
He didn’t specify an exact date of return but said it would be ‘soon’ so it doesn’t look too bad:
“Not a big problem, he has a little bit of tendonitits on his achilles. We envisage he will be back soon.”
Kieran Trippier – calf
Kieran Trippier has been out for a while now.
However, Howe is very hesitant to throw him into the deep end too soon, as he said this:
“It has been a difficult injury for him. An injury to the calf, one we have to be very careful with and we’d hoped he’d be fit in and around the West Ham game but we’ll have to wait and see how he goes during this week.
“He’s desperate to be involved, he knows what’s at stake for us towards the end of the season and his qualities are obvious. We’re desperate to have him back but it has to be at the right time.”
Joelinton – thigh
Eddie Howe received some devastating news earlier this month as Joelinton could be set to miss the remainder of the current campaign due to a thigh injury, which was picked up during the 3-0 win over bitter rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup. It was confirmed by the club after the midfielder underwent thigh surgery.
Howe was understandably despondent when commenting on it in his pre-match press conference on Friday (26th January), saying (via The Chronicle): “Massive blow for us. We knew when he did the injury it immediately didn’t look good. We didn’t know he’d be out as long. He’s had a stop-start season. When he is fit and firing, there’s no one like him and he brings a different dynamic to our midfield. He’s a leader as well. He’ll be a big miss.”
Nick Pope – dislocated shoulder
Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder during his side’s 1-0 victory against Manchester United in early December, and it was stated that he could miss up to four months, keeping him sidelined until April.
Howe provided an update on Pope’s condition soon after when speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle: “He’s had a couple of appointments, visited specialists. I am sort of awaiting final news on what is going to happen.
“The operation hasn’t happened yet but we are thinking roughly around four months. So it is a big blow to us, but one that we expected after the game. As soon as you see the dislocation, we were fearing the worst.”
And, the Newcastle boss released his most recent update earlier on today, with the hope that the Englishman returns in late April:
“We’re still hoping that it’ll be the end of April initially again, but similar to Kieran we’ll take the time needed to try and get him right. If that’s a bit longer, that’s a bit longer, if it’s shorter than great. He’s out on the training pitch, he’s not training with us yet, he’s making the early stages in terms of diving and getting a feel for goalkeeping again. But it is early stages and we’ve got to make sure that we don’t put him at risk.”
Lewis Miley – back problem
Lewis Miley is on Newcastle United’s injury list after picking up a back problem while away with the England Development Squad.
And, it doesn’t look like he’ll be back anytime soon, as Eddie Howe said this:
“Lewis has come back with a back problem. We are seeking specialist opinion on that. It’s slightly unclear on what the injury is so we don’t know yet.”
Sven Botman – ACL
Sven Botman picked up an ACL injury while playing against Manchester City in the FA Cup prior to the international break, and is now set to be out for an extended period of time.
Howe had this to say on his situation:
“A big blow. It’s a complex story around Sven this season since he got his knee injury. Initially, he had a partial tear of his ACL, we saw specialist opinion on that injury and there were conflicting reports on what he should do next.
“Ultimately, our medical team advised him to get surgery. He wanted to carry on playing and we’ll always try to guide and help the players but it’s their bodies and they have to make the final decision.
“I’ve seen several players from that injury come back and carry on playing and stay fit. It’s a delicate issue for him. He now has a long period of rehab ahead of him and we wish him well and hope he comes back in a really good place.”
Callum Wilson – pectoral
Sadly for Howe, he’s still without another striker as Callum Wilson suffered a pectoral injury in the latter stages of the win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
And, Howe has now provided a positive update on the striker, as he said this:
“He’s looking good, he’s doing the hard yards, running hard. He’s able to keep very fit and build his strength. I anticipate when he comes back he’ll be looking really good.”
Latest Newcastle United suspension news
Tonali is the only Magpies player currently serving a long-term suspension. With the yellow card threshold expiring after 19 games in the Premier League, most players are on a clean slate, requiring another five bookings (or ten in total) prior to GW33 before being handed a suspension.
However, Bruno Guimaraes is on the brink of a two-match ban as he currently sits on nine yellow cards in the Premier League.
Sandro Tonali – suspended (illegal betting)
The Italy international will be sidelined from competitive action until next August after breaching betting rules.
A Newcastle statement read: “Sandro Tonali has been banned from competitive football for ten months, as effective from Friday, 27th October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
“FIGC’s sanction includes an overall 18-month ban, with eight months commuted as the player participates in a therapeutic plan and educational programme in Italy consisting of 16 commitments.
“On the evening of Friday, 27th October, Newcastle United received confirmation that FIFA has endorsed FIGC’s sanction to be applied worldwide, meaning Sandro will be eligible to return to competitive football from Tuesday, 27th August 2024.”
