Liverpool have just found a new Szoboszlai

Liverpool central midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai turned up yet again to deliver an impressive performance against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Hungary international was selected by Arne Slot to line up in the middle of the park alongside Ryan Gravenberch, with Alexis Mac Allister left on the bench, and caught the eye with his display.

It was his corner that was headed in by Virgil van Dijk for the winning goal in stoppage time, as he put his set-piece into the perfect area for the captain to nod the ball in to make it 2-1.

On top of his assist for the winner, Szoboszlai completed 93% (54/58) of his attempted passes throughout the game, providing a reliable outlet on the ball for the away side.

Whilst Mohamed Salah may end up claiming the award in his farewell campaign with the Reds, the Hungarian star deserves to be crowned the club’s Player of the Season.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s Player of the Season

No other Liverpool player has been as consistent a performer for the club in the 2025/26 campaign, as he consistently stood out as Slot’s main man.

Only Virgil van Dijk has played more minutes (2,970) than Szoboszlai (2,783) in the Premier League, but the Dutch defender has had his share of slip-ups, with four errors that have led to shots, goals, or penalties for the opposition.

The 25-year-old star has delivered 12 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances in all competitions, providing a big offensive threat to go along with his workhorse-like play in the middle of the park.

Szoboszlai, who has had to play ten games at right-back and ten times as a right midfielder, has excelled in a host of statistics in and out of possession in the Premier League for the Reds.

The former RB Leipzig star has been a big contributor to the team’s play in and out of possession, whilst being consistently available, and that is why he deserves to be the Player of the Season for Liverpool.

Liverpool already have their next Dominik Szoboszlai

In the 2-1 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby, one player showed that Slot already has his next version of Szoboszlai waiting in the wings to shine.

Curtis Jones, a central midfielder, was asked to fill in at right-back for the Reds, despite Jeremie Frimpong being available on the bench, and did a sublime job for Liverpool.

Despite playing at right-back, the England international looked at home in an unfamiliar position and was the only player in the game to end the match with more than 100 touches of the ball.

As well as ranking first in the game for touches, Jones made the most ball recoveries in the game, between both teams, as he won possession back a staggering 16 times.

His positioning, despite not being a natural right-back, was fantastic throughout the match, putting his body in the right place to shield the ball and prevent himself from being exposed by the hosts.

He had only started three matches at right-back this season prior to the trip to the Hill Dickinson, as Szoboszlai has usually been favoured in that role when a natural option has not been picked, but his lack of experience did not show.

Jones started behind Salah, who scored the opening goal of the game, and his impressive positional and defensive play meant that the Egpytian winger did not have to do as many hard yards defensively, allowing him to focus on being a match-winner.

The Liverpool academy graduate has only started 13 of his 29 appearances in the Premier League this season, but the 25-year-old has shown that he can be the next Szoboszlai for Slot.

He has the technical quality and athletic attributes to be an excellent option in central midfield and at right-back for the Reds, just as Szoboszlai has been throughout this season.

Jones may not be able to score four free-kicks in a Premier League season, but he has proven that he can be an incredibly valuable player for the Dutch boss.
