Man Utd readying £78m bid to sign a Cunha upgrade who’s “like Mbappe”

One shot on target was all it took for Manchester United to steal the points on Saturday evening, with Matheus Cunha rifling home for his eighth Premier League goal of the season following yet another Bruno Fernandes assist.

The Brazilian – who scored 15 goals at Molineux in 2024/25 – might not have been prolific following his £62.5m summer switch, but he’s putting together quite the collection of finishes.

Indeed, from his first Old Trafford goal at home to Brighton and Hove Albion in October, Cunha has produced an array of eye-catching moments, be it his long-range curler away at the Emirates, or his lashed strike from the angle at home to Fulham.

There’s a spectacular, game-changing quality to his game that is certainly appealing, but that being said, United could now be targeting something of an upgrade on that left flank this summer.

With Patrick Dorgu still sidelined, Cunha remains the only senior option on the left-wing, albeit with even the 26-year-old himself having been signed to operate in one of the two number ten berths in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

That highlights the need for a new addition on that side heading into next season, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers believed to be among those under consideration.

Looking further afield too, SportsBoom have reported that the Red Devils are among the Premier League clubs who are interested in signing Juventus sensation, Kenan Yildiz, even after the Turkey international penned a fresh deal back in February.

As per the report, the INEOS hierarchy are believed to have knocked on the Serie A side’s door with a possible bid of around €90m (£78m), with the 20-year-old deemed to be the ‘top target’ for this summer.

That offer is likely to be insufficient, however, with the Italian giants set to demand upwards of €100m (£87m), almost viewing their prized asset as ‘unsellable’ as things stand.

United and INEOS remain in the mix regardless, with both Arsenal and Chelsea also said to be admirers of the German-born superstar.

How Yildiz compares to Cunha this season

Still only 20, it is evidently clear how highly regarded Yildiz is back in Turin, having notably captained his side for the trip to the Bernabeu in the Champions League earlier this season.

Manchester United have a new target to pursue ahead of the summer transfer window.

Sticking with Real Madrid too, in the view of European football writer, Danny Corcoran, the in-demand wideman boasts “[Kylian] Mbappe-like ability”, mirroring the Frenchman in his ability to almost win a game on his own.

Indeed, amid what has been a difficult few years for Juventus, after their prior Serie A dominance, Yildiz has been the undisputed shining light, following his arrival from Bayern Munich’s youth ranks back in 2022.

Having since risen through Juve’s own academy and ‘Next Gen’ set-up, he is now front and centre for both club and country, racking up 48 goals and assists in 127 games for his club, alongside five goals in 28 games for Turkey.

This season too, in particular, he has recorded 11 goals and ten assists in all competitions, including a stellar return of ten goals and six assists in Serie A.

For comparison, back in Manchester, Cunha’s debut season for United has seen him score eight goals and register only two assists in the Premier League, with Michael Carrick’s crop of forwards still reliant on Fernandes to deliver in a creative sense.

Yildiz, thankfully, would more than shoulder the burden on the Portuguese genius, having racked up a remarkable 15 ‘big chances’ created in 2025/26, alongside averaging 2.2 key passes per game.

Again, for context, United’s own number ten has created just three ‘big chances’ and averaged only one key pass per game, hardly making an impact in that side of the game.

Where Yildiz also excels, as that Mbappe comparison pointed to, is his innate dribbling and ball-carrying prowess, having averaged 2.2 successful dribbles per game in Serie A this season.

Cunha, while an impressive ball-carrier himself, averages just 1.3 in that regard, further highlighting just what a superstar Yildiz already is despite his youth.

United, amid their current standing in third in the table, have certainly thrived with the current attacking options at Carrick’s disposal, although there’s always room for improvement, particularly ahead of a likely Champions League campaign next season.

Matheus Cunha

In Yildiz – who can also operate as a number ten or second striker – INEOS might well be able to secure the perfect upgrade for 2026/27, provided Juventus are tempted to cash in, of course.
