Rangers duo have played their ‘final games’ at Ibrox and have no future under Rohl

Rangers manager Danny Rohl appears to have no space in his long-term Ibrox plans for two players, according to a report this week.

Rangers braced for opening split clash against Motherwell

Scottish football has rarely seen anything quite like this title race.

Three clubs locked together at the top of the table, barely any points separating them, and five games left to decide who lifts the trophy.

It is as tight as it has been in years, and it could not come at a more pivotal moment for Rangers.

Hearts sit one point clear of Rohl’s side at the summit of the Scottish Premiership, with Celtic a further two points adrift in third. The three rivals all won on the same weekend for the first time since January recently, ensuring the pressure is shared evenly.

Rangers’ contribution to that weekend was a remarkable 6-3 victory at Falkirk, a nine-goal thriller that did their goal difference no harm at all and underlined just how far Rohl has transformed this club since taking the reins.

It is a resurgence that few would have predicted given the disastrous start to the season under Russell Martin, and the German has built genuine belief at Ibrox that the title is within reach.

Decision made: Experienced defender set to leave Rangers in free transfer this summer

The Gers have several players with expiring contracts.

Rangers face Hearts away on May 4 and Celtic away on May 10 — two games that could define their entire campaign.

Chris Sutton has already ruled Celtic out of the race, insisting it is a straight fight between Hearts and Rangers.

While all eyes are fixed on the run-in, some difficult business is already being planned for the summer, and two familiar faces at Ibrox are set to move on for good.

Cortes and Cifuentes have played ‘final games’ for Rangers

According to Rangers NewsOscar Cortes and Jose Cifuentes have both played their ‘final games’ for the club.

The pair are both currently out on loan and are not expected to return to Govan, with Cortes having recently stated publicly that he is happy with life away from Glasgow — effectively talking himself out of any first-team comeback.

The story of both players is one of promise unfulfilled.

Cortes, 22, made just 21 appearances for Rangers after initially joining on loan from Lens in February 2024 before the move was made permanent for £4.5 million in the summer of 2025.

He spent time on loan at Sporting Gijón in Spain before that arrangement was terminated, and Rangers subsequently confirmed he had joined Argentine side Huracán on loan with an option to buy.

That buy option now looks likely to be the permanent exit that brings the curtain down on a Rangers career that never really got started.

Cifuentes tells a similar tale.

The Ecuadorian international has made just 20 appearances for the club since joining in 2023, spending time on loan at Cruzeiro, Aris Thessaloniki and now Toronto FC in MLS, where he has made an impressive start to the 2026 season and Toronto hold an option to sign him permanently.

Rangers are also set to lose Leon King and Ben Davies when their contracts expire, while loanees Derek Cornelius, Max Aarons and Jayden Meghoma will not be returning either (Rangers News).

It shapes up as a significant summer overhaul, with discussions held over a permanent deal for Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore as well.
