Vantage Data Centers raises US$1.6B for Asia-Pacific expansion

  • Vantage Data Centres raises US$1.6B from GIC and ADIA to expand in APAC and Johor.
  • AI demand drives APAC growth.

Vantage Data Centers has secured a US$1.6 billion investment to expand its Asia-Pacific operations, including the purchase of a major campus in Johor, Malaysia.

The funding round was led by affiliates of GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). Both groups are existing backers of Vantage and joined the latest round to support its regional growth.

Part of the funds will go toward acquiring Yondr Group’s 300MW+ data centre campus in Sedenak Tech Park, Johor. The site is one of Southeast Asia’s largest hyperscale campuses and was recently acquired by investment vehicles managed by DigitalBridge, one of Vantage’s biggest investors.

The new backing highlights how rising demand for artificial intelligence is reshaping investment in digital infrastructure in Asia. Vantage said the money will cover the Johor deal and help scale its wider regional platform.

“The significant investment marks a pivotal milestone in our APAC growth journey,” said Jeremy Deutsch, president of Vantage Data Centers, APAC. “With the support of GIC and ADIA, we are positioned as one of the largest providers of sustainable AI and cloud digital infrastructure in the region. Adding the Johor campus to our portfolio will bring our APAC footprint to 1GW of capacity. The acquisition enables Vantage APAC to continue to deliver scale and speed for our customers.”

Boon Chin Hau, chief investment officer for infrastructure at GIC, said: “We are pleased to partner with Vantage, alongside DigitalBridge and ADIA, to support the development of data centre infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region. As a leading global data centre developer and operator, Vantage is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for data centre capacity in the Asia-Pacific region. We look forward to contributing to its ongoing expansion and success.”

ADIA’s Khadem AlRemeithi said: “The new commitment supports the growth of Vantage’s APAC platform at a time when advances in AI and cloud computing are driving regional demand for data centre capacity.” DigitalBridge, which has backed Vantage, also welcomed the move.

The investment and the Johor acquisition are expected to close by the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to regulatory and customary approvals.

Johor campus details

Once developed, the Johor campus – known as JHB1 – will deliver more than 300MW of IT capacity in three data centres. Built on nearly 73 acres, the campus sits inside the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, giving it direct access to dark fibre and strong connectivity with nearby hubs.

The site will include features like direct-to-chip liquid cooling and is on track to meet EDGE sustainability standards. It was originally financed through a green loan, a structure Vantage has already used in other regions.

Johor is emerging as a strategic hub for Southeast Asia’s data centre industry. Its proximity to Singapore allows operators to capture overflow demand, while lower costs and government support make it an attractive alternative for new projects.

With Johor added to its portfolio, Vantage expects to reach 1GW of planned and operating IT capacity in Australia, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
