WhatsApp Ads Now in India: Coming Soon to Status and Channels

If you’re a business owner in India, you’re likely one of the 200+ million users of WhatsApp Business – the world’s largest business user base for the app. Until now, however, advertising directly within WhatsApp wasn’t possible. Businesses had to rely on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to run Click to WhatsApp adsdriving users into the app from outside.

That’s about to change.

Meta has officially announced a new ad format coming soon to WhatsApp — and for the first time, ads will appear inside WhatsApp itselfspecifically in the Status and Channels section under the Updates tab.

This is a game-changer for brands looking to get discovered right where customers are already spending time.

What’s Changing?

More than 1.5 billion users globally visit the Updates tab daily — either to view Statuses (stories shared by friends and businesses that last 24 hours) or to follow Channels for content from their favorite people, brands, and organizations.

WhatsApp is now introducing two new ad formats within this tab:

1. Ads in WhatsApp Status

These are similar to Instagram Stories ads. Users scrolling through Status updates will now start seeing sponsored posts from businesses, helping you reach people in a more visual and engaging way — right within WhatsApp.

Why this matters:

Customers can discover your brand while casually checking status updates, and with a tap, they can start chatting with your business directly.

2. Promoted Channels in the Directory

WhatsApp Channels are gaining popularity as one-way broadcast tools. Businesses can now boost their Channels to appear more prominently in the WhatsApp Channel directory.

Why this matters:

It makes it easier for people to find and follow your Channel — helping you build an owned audience base inside WhatsApp itself.

Where Will These Ads Appear?

All these ads will be featured within the Updates tab — a dedicated space that users explore when they’re open to discovery.

Importantly, personal messages, calls, and private statuses remain end-to-end encrypted and ad-free. WhatsApp’s core promise of privacy isn’t changing — ads are being added only in the discovery-focused areas.

Are WhatsApp Ads Available in India?

Yes — India is one of the primary markets where these new ad formats will be rolled out first. With over 500 million WhatsApp usersIndia represents the largest user base for the platform.

That’s half a billion users who open WhatsApp not just to message, but now to discover.

This makes the upcoming ads in Status and Channels a massive opportunity for Indian businesses — whether you’re an FMCG brand, D2C product seller, content creator, or local business building a following.

What Should Businesses Do Now?

While the feature isn’t live yet, now is the best time to prepare.

When the ads go live, you’ll be ready to meet your customers where they are.
