DraftKings targets Alberta launch for online betting and casino
DraftKings has announced plans to launch its online sportsbook and casino products in Alberta, subject to regulatory approval and licensing in the Canadian province.
Players in Alberta can already pre-register for DraftKings Sportsbook and casino services ahead of the expected market opening. Earlier this month, the provincial government confirmed that Alberta’s regulated market is set to go live on 13 July.
If approved, Alberta would become DraftKings’ second online market in Canada, following its entry into Ontario in May 2022, shortly after the province opened its regulated iGaming sector.
Greg Karamitis, Executive Vice President and general Manager of sports at DraftKings said:
We’re excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings’ footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta. With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup, hosted here in North America, it’s a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.
An Alberta launch would mark the 34th North American jurisdiction where DraftKings offers online sports betting, and the seventh with online casino products.
The company has continued to grow its presence across the region. In February, the Arkansas Racing Commission unanimously approved a vendor licence allowing DraftKings to launch in Arkansas.
The licence followed a partnership with Southland Casino Hotel, which has since replaced its Betly-branded mobile sportsbook with the DraftKings platform.
At the same time, FanDuel also received approval to enter the Arkansas market through a partnership with Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort.
With Alberta preparing to open its regulated market, DraftKings is positioning itself for early entry, continuing its broader strategy of expanding across North America while capitalising on major sporting events to drive user engagement.
