Kalshi to launch “Portal for Parents” to address underage use
Kalshi, a prediction market platform, has announced new steps to limit minors from accessing its services, including tools to detect the use of a parent’s identification to create an account and improved identity verification systems.
Co-founder and CEO Tarek Mansour made these comments at the Semafor World Economy conference and explained how Kalshi is working to eliminate the common method many minors use to circumvent the age restriction by creating an account with their parent’s information.
One of Kalshi’s major initiatives is to create a portal for parents to determine if someone else is using their personal information to access the site without their consent.
Co-founder and CEO Tarek Mansour, said:
We are launching a portal for parents to basically submit their identification, even if they don’t want to be users of Kalshi, to see if someone is using it. Because then they can see if their children are using their ID and police it.
The system is designed to function independently of the platform’s user base, meaning individuals do not need an account to verify potential misuse. This approach gives parents greater visibility and control when their identity may have been used to bypass age restrictions.
Kalshi is also strengthening its onboarding process by introducing AI-powered facial verification. New users will be required to upload a selfie, which will be compared against their submitted identification.
Mansour explained that the goal is to introduce accountability within trusted circles:
How do we kind of create a sort of accountability structure amongst friends and families for people to be like, ‘Hey, you might be doing a little too much here’. We want this to be a tool for good, not a tool for excessive behaviours.
While implementing the new compliance measures, Kalshi has taken a proactive stance in addressing underage participants and increasing accountability for users. Kalshi is also operating within an evolving regulatory regime, and we expect upcoming rulings will have an impact on the regulation of prediction markets within the U.S.
